Passwords come with both benefits and disadvantages. It is relatively easy to breach trough simple pattern. At the same time, a complex one can negatively impact the user’s experience. One cannot write it down because it is not secure enough. Saving it to secure storage is not a perfect solution because it requires its own – strong – password.
Apple treats security seriously. Should you forget the iPhone password, the only thing you will be choosing from is the desired hard reset method. Essentially this means you will have to wipe all the data entirely before being able to use the smartphone again. Luckily, there is a set of actions to do to minimize or even eliminate data loss. Let’s dive right into it.
Synchronization and restoring
If you value your data, regularly synch all types of content you do not wish to lose to the cloud storage. If you forget your iPhone password, you can simply hard reset and restore (almost) all the data back afterward. The bad news is that cloud storages have the passwords you need to remember.
For this purpose, you can use your iCloud account. All you need to have is:
- Apple ID credentials,
- enough space – payment might be required to extend it,
- good internet connection,
- a lot of time.
You can choose the types of content to be saved under the iCloud menu item in the Settings. It is possible to back up manually. Alternatively, the device will do it whenever the phone is not used and firmly connected to Wi-Fi.
Another way to save your files is to synchronize using iTunes. Keep in mind that it can save only the media content. After connecting the device to a computer or laptop with cable, you will be able to choose the final destination of the file. Feel free to pick your computer or iCloud option. You can also encrypt the output file (should you save to PC) so that it will be useless unless you know the password. Afterward, it will be possible to use the Restore backup feature.
You can also use third-party applications to create and restore. This way, you will have more flexibility since there will be an option to save most of the data. The flip side is that you will most probably need to pay in order to be able to use the software.
Once all data is safe, it is time to get familiar with how to wipe the data without knowing the password. You can:
- Enter recovery mode by pressing certain combinations of buttons. Keep in mind that it can differ depending on your iPhone model.
- Wipe the data using iTunes. This would work only if you synched before.
- Use iCloud (works under certain conditions only).
- Install third-party protection removing applications to bypass the lock screen.
You can learn how to use all four of them in more detail by reading How to reset the phone without a password.
The security layer is vital to restrict other people from using your personal data. If you forgot your password, the only way (in most cases) is to erase all the data. There are several solutions one can use to back up files on a regular basis. They enable users to restore most of their data should they forget the iPhone password, change, or lose the device.
Here we’ve described what you can do if you forgot the phone password iPhone. There is only one way to unlock the phone – Hard Reset. Unfortunately, in this case, you will lose all the data on your phone. The good news is that you can save your data by synchronizing your device with your iCloud account.
