Our mobile devices, thanks to the ability to host apps, have become our digital assistants. We need them for both fun and business. However, all programs have one thing in common – they all need updating. Developers release a new version when they find a bug, change the design, or add some new features. In most cases, more recent releases are more stable and good-looking.
While some apps are free-of-charge, we have to pay for the others – most useful – ones. It’s always worth having the best software build, especially when you use it to make money and paid to take advantage of it. The same applies to the gaming apps as new features are released quite frequently there. Let’s look at how not to miss out and update in time on your iPhone.
If you are running iOS or iPadOS 13 or higher you should know that all your apps downloaded from App Store are updated automatically, unless you intentionally turned off automatic updates before. By default, you do not receive update notifications, everything happens in the background.
How do I check and run application updates manually?
The most obvious location to check right away is the App Store – the home of all the programs. You don’t even have to enter the app – look for the red badge on the right side of the icon located on your home screen. The number indicates how many programs can be updated right now. To do that, do the following:
- tap the App Store icon,
- choose the Update tab located on the bottom to see the list of available options,
- look at the Profile icon located in the top right corner if you are running iOS 13 or higher,
- glance through the list of available options and choose which ones you wish to update.
Feel free to go one by one or choose multiple programs. Make sure to connect to the Wi-Fi hot spot since in most cases updating through mobile is slower and requires a lot of (sometimes costly) mobile traffic.
Update all apps at once
If you do not feel like going one by one, there is an option to receive all updates at once. When you find yourself on the Available updates page mentioned above, please search for the Update All button (it is typically located on the very top of the apps list). Give your device some time to download and install all updates available. Do not disconnect from the internet, though; otherwise, the process will start over only when you connect again.
Set up auto-update
Receiving new versions once they are released, and you have a stable internet connection might be a good idea, too. Why waste time opening the App Store every time if there is an automatic way of taking care of it for you? Here is how to set it up:
1. Open Main Settings from your home screen by hitting the cog icon.
2. Scroll down looking through the menu items on the left-hand side.
3. Tap iTunes and App Store icon.
4. On the right-hand side, enable slider saying App Updates.
5. Set or remove the cellular data usage limit below to avoid consuming mobile traffic.
Should you (for some reason) change your decision in the future – disable the Updates slider. You will then have to go through the entire process on your own, though.
Why some people never update?
Some beliefs restrict people from updating regularly. Instead, they continue using old versions that are more vulnerable, less stable, and do not have any new features added by developers.
The most common one is that when you download update files, they are added to the old ones. As a result, it occupies more disk space than if you would re-install the app. In reality, the package replaces the old version without touching the users’ data. However, the application can indeed start taking more space if the developer increased the file size or if you never clean cached files. Remember that when you look through the pictures or watch a video, the content is saved to the local storage.
Another common fear is that the new update will delete all the settings and user’s data. Though it was mentioned previously that recent versions do not affect your information, people on the internet report that sometimes things can go wrong. Even if such stories are grounded, it must be happening on infrequent occasions.
It worth saying that some people also like to keep things the old way only. However, they should keep in mind that a good portion of new stuff is good for brains once in a while. Besides, outdated programs can start working erratically. Older versions might not be optimized well enough for the new devices and stop launching if you change your iPhone.
While it is up to you whether to have new versions regularly or not, keep in mind that updating is usually a good idea. It does not take more space and will not erase your data. Get a new release from Play Store, especially if you paid for a software piece and use it for working purposes.
