Phone cases help to protect smartphones – portable electronic devices that we carry around everywhere we go. However, the beauty of flagship devices can be obstructed by the old silicon layer serving us well.

Clear phone cases are generally made of plastic, silicone, or rubber. A simple and obvious solution is to buy a new cover and throw out a new one. However, read this article before you leave the page – it will (probably) change your mind.

Luckily, there are some more environment-friendly ways to give your cover a new life. Let’s find out how to clean a clear phone case using anything you can find at your apartment.

Safe substances

Generally, it is not advised to use:

  • sharp objects or abrasives that can scratch the surface, such as scissors, hard brushes or metal scouring pads,
  • solvents that can easily damage silicone,
  • undiluted chlorine-based bleach,
  • abrasive powders.

Bleach can be used as a last resort. However, the risk of damaging the cover, in this case, is very high. It is worth trying safer methods first using:

  • soapy water,
  • baking soda,
  • toothpaste and brush,
  • alcohol-based products,
  • food acids.

It is also possible to clean the covers with melted butter as well as sunflower or olive oils.

How to clean silicone phone case?

Silicone is a porous material that can easily soap up any substance. It can be tough to remove the areas polluted with durable dye. Cleansers are often very dear; thus, we need to find something cheaper – such as an eraser. You can try to rub the surface until the stains disappear simply.

One of the safest and more effective methods will require a deep bowl, some shampoo, and water. Both liquid or solid soap will fit – in the last case, however, you will need to lather (or rasp) it until the liquid is dense enough. Then submerge the cover in for some 30 minutes. If it floats up, use something solid and heavy enough to press it down. Afterward, rub it with an old toothbrush or sponge. Rinse with water and let it dry for an hour until the remaining water evaporates.

Always help the process by drying it off with paper towels or napkins – otherwise, you will see the white stains.
It is also possible to use baking soda. Follow these steps:

  • dissolve half a teaspoon of powder in some water,
  • stir until it becomes gruel, add more soda or water it needed,
  • use a finger or a plastic object to gently apply it to the cover (don’t rub hard),
  • give it several minutes to dissolve the stains,
  • rinse underwater.

Give the water enough time to dry off before using – moisture can be harmful to your device.

How to clean a rubber phone case?

The material is quite similar to silicone; thus, the methods above will work as well. Make sure to remove the stains promptly – otherwise, it will be next to impossible to clean it out.
There is one more (quite exotic) way that includes melting some butter. Alternatively, distribute any kind of cooking oil across the stain and leave for five minutes. Use a paper towel or a piece of cotton fiber to wipe the remains off. It will help to remove simple stains on silicone covers as well. This method works well against the sticky residue.

How to clean a clear phone case that turned yellow?

Silicone tends to turn yellow as the time goes by – the older the case, the less transparent it will become. If the cover is regularly exposed to direct sunlight or high temperatures, the degradation process will speed up. When this happens, you can:

  • spray the cover with warm water,
  • rub some toothpaste over the surface using a brush or a cotton bud,
  • let it lay still for some 10-15 minutes,
  • rinse with water and repeat should it be necessary,
  • dry the cover off.

Alternatively, try the soda method. One more way is to use the solution of alcohol, soda, and water of the same proportion. You will need to apply the solution and leave for some 25 minutes. Remember – you should never use bleach with yellowish silicone products.

How to clean a clear phone case that turned brown?

Sometimes cover changes the color entirely. Once it happens, you can apply some petrol or citric acid with a sponge. However, since this is potentially dangerous, wear protective gloves. Make sure not to rub the surface too hard and rinse the cover off thoroughly afterward.

One can also wipe the surface with isopropyl or alcohol wipes. It is also possible to do it with vodka, which typically contains around 40% of alcohol. If nothing else works – dissolve bleach in water (1:16 parts or use manufacturers’ directions on the bottle). Soak the cover in the solution for some 10 minutes, scrub it, and rinse with water. Before you start, open the windows, wear protective gloves, mask and apron.

How to clean a white phone case?

You can use fingernail remover to clean white cases with no color pattern. It worth testing it on a small cover part before cleaning the entire surface to make sure it reacts well.

Silicone, rubber, and plastic products tend to look worse as time goes by. In most cases, however, it is possible to give them another life. To do that, one simply needs to use the things one typically has available at home.

Conclusion

Here we have described how to clean the clear phone case. Choose the method of cleaning the phone case, which is suitable for the material from which your case is made.
